D.I. KHAN: At least ten people were killed and ten others including Mullah Nazir sustained injuries in suicide and drone attacks in South Waziristan Agency (SWA) on Thursday, officials said.
The first incident took place in Wana, the main city of SWA when a suicide bomber attacked the vehicle of the local militant commander Mullah Nazir which resulted in killing seven people and injuring ten others.
An official of the Political Administration told The Frontier Post that seven persons were killed and 10 others injured in the attack, adding that one passerby, an 8-year-old boy, was also killed in the attack.
Spokesperson of Mullah Nazir Taliban Group, Maulana Amir Nawaz , told The Frontier Post that 6 persons were killed and 12 others including Mullah Nazir were injured in the suicide attack. And 10 nearby shops and some vehicles were also damaged in the attack. He added that Mullah Nazir was slightly injured and out of danger.
An eyewitness told The Frontier Post that first he heard a big bang, followed by severe firing. He further said that the panic spread in Wana Bazaar after the blast and people did not know where to go.
Mullah Nazir Taliban personnel cordoned off the site of the blast. Soon after the blast, shops and markets were closed down and people rushed to get out of Wana Bazaar.
It is pertinent to mention that Mullah Nazir had narrowly escaped a drone attack in Dogga village some time back. Mullah Nazir became head of the local Taliban outfit in 2007 when he fought against the Uzbek militants in Wana sub-division of South Waziristan, and forced the Uzbeks out of Wana after a fierce fight which claimed a number of lives.
In another incident, three people were killed when a US drone hit a car and fired two missiles in Sheen Warsak area of Tehsil Birmal, Wana, security officials confirmed.
The vehicle was completely destroyed in the attack which was carried out late afternoon, sources further told.
Sheen Warsak is located near Pak Afghan border in Tehsil Birmal at about 20 km west of Wana Bazaar, the main town of SWA.
