Excessive rise of female psychiatric patients as a result of drone attacks

Excessive rise of female psychiatric patients as a result of drone attacks,,,,http://www.thefrontierpost.com/article/50577/

Farooq Mehsud
PESHAWAR: \"The terrible deafening blast, followed by smoke and dust that covered the house of my neighbour was frightening; my whole body was trembling; but I dared to look at what happened in my neighbours. I saw mutilated bodies buried under the debris of the destroyed house,\" said 40-year-old Rukhsana Bibi while narrating the ordeal of the US drone strike at a house in Baghar, a border village of South Waziristan, on 12th August, 2008 in which 13 people including women and children were killed.
Journalists and local tribesmen were not allowed to visit the spot hit by the US drone attack because the Taliban had cordoned off the targeted area, but being the closest neighbour, Rukhsana Bibi was the first to witness the devastation even before Taliban\'s arrival. \"Since the day I witnessed I am restless, using sleeping pills on regular basis to have some sound sleep,\" Rukhsana Bibi added.
\"Whenever my mother sees drones flying in the area she hides herself in a room to avoid hearing the buzzing sound of the unmanned planes,\" said Shams Ullah, the older son of Rukhsana Bibi.
\"Our mother is under treatment, but we can\'t hope for Rukhsana\'s complete recovery until the end of US drones\' buzzing sounds and strikes in the region,\" Shams Ullah added.
Arms-twisted analysts and so-called human rights activists missed the gory aspect of the controversial and unabated drone strikes, which left many tribesmen, women and children psychologically ill in the tribal badland.
Forget about the steps taken by the government and international community for the education and health of families who left parts of the war-battered Fata, most of the elderly and children of families trapped inside Fata have developed mental problems following years long campaign of remotely-piloted drones flying over the region almost round-the-clock.
An illiterate village lady, Rukhsana Bibi, is one victim among hundreds or even thousands of women living in the border region who have developed psychological disorders due to the continuing US drone campaign and strikes in the tribal belt of Pakistan, especially North and South Waziristan.
\"About 80 percent of the womenfolk and children in the restive tribal regions are suffering from mental disorders and psychic problems, said Dr Muneer Dawar, head of the District Headquarters and Teaching Hospital Psychiatry ward in Dera Ismail Khan. Dr Muneer mostly deals the patients from North and South Waziristan Agencies.
The alarming increase of psychiatry patients in the tribal regions has been reported but the government has failed to help the tribesmen and provide them with better health care facilities. Due to meager resources the poor tribesmen couldn\'t migrate from the tribal region to nearby settled districts.
Gul Bano, 45, a housewife has developed a mental disorder since 24th February 2010, when a US drone strike at a house next to her home killed nine including a child and inflicted injuries on three others in the Dargai Mandi area of North Wazirsitan Agency. She has become a psychiatric patient and whenever she hears the sound of US drones immediately she runs inside the cellar built inside their house for protection from drone strikes and shelling from military and militants, said her husband, Ayub Khan.
Ayub Khan added, \"Gull Bano was taken to a psychiatrist in District Bannu where the psychiatrist suggested shifting of Gull Bano to an area where Bano couldn\'t see US drones hovering over there and also couldn\'t hear its buzzing sounds.\"
Acting upon the advice of Dr Javaid Akhter, head of the Psychiatry department of Khalif Gull Nawaz Teaching Hospital in Bannu, Gull Banno was shifted to Dera Ismail Khan (DIK). Gull Bano\'s husband said that consequently Bano lost her fear of US drones.
\"But after two years we went back to our hometown as I lost my job abroad and now could not afford to live in a rented house in DIK. As we reached the limits of North Waziristan Agency, Gul Bano again heard the same hateful sounds of drone planes and this time her sense of insecurity and fear of being hit was stronger than before,\" said Ayub Khan, a taxi driver in United Arab Emirates.
Dr Mian Iftikhar, focal person for the Pakistan Psychiatrist Society in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa said that there are 450 registered psychiatrists in the country inhabited by 200 million people but there is not even a single post in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) for Psychiatrist.
\"No care is taken for mental problems of FATA people and it is the reason that the number of psychological problems in the people of FATA are constantly on the rise,\" Dr Ifitkhar said, adding that alongside drone strikes, joblessness and lack of opportunities are also contributing to the increase of mental disorder patients in FATA.
Dr Muneer Dawar, further explained that women feel insecure while children develop a severe sense of fear in the areas where drone strikes are conducted frequently, adding that the situation has worsened with the passage of time as the number of US drone planes are increasing to fly over the region. Dr Muneer added that mental weakness is developing in the young generation who are living in areas which are under continuous surveillance of the US drones, saying that future generation will have a lot of mentally weakness and psychological disorder.
\"Such future generation with psychological disorder can easily be recycled by militants to carry out terror attacks and suicide bombing,\" Dr Muneer warned.
The London based Bureau of Investigative Journalism has compiled press reports that indicate US Drone strikes have killed up to 2525 to 3613 people in Pakistan since 17th June 2004, the first strike in which Taliban commander Nek Muhammad, and two children were killed in Wana, South Waziristan. Less than 2 percent of the high-profile targets are killed by C.I.A drones in the tribal belt of Pakistan.
The issue of psychological disorders faced by tribal women has been highlighted by the non-governmental organizations as the number of psychiatric patient visiting Peshawar and other cities is growing in leaps and bounds.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has finalized its program to conduct a fact finding survey inside the tribal areas.
\"Women there are the worst sufferers as they are totally confined to their houses and cannot share their problems with anyone\" Shahid ullah Jan, Peshawar based head of the HRCP said.
However, the issue of the US drone strikes in FATA has been raised before the Peshawar High Court and the Supreme Court of Pakistan and both the highly esteemed courts declared US drone strikes as illegal and in violation of the country\'s sovereignty. \"Despite high Judiciary\'s decision, declaring US drones strikes illegal, no practical steps have been taken in this regard and this is in contempt of court, said Advocate Shahzad Akber, a lawyer handling the cases against US drone strikes in Pakistan\'s tribal belt.
Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) Member of the National Assembly from South Wazirsitan, Ghalib Khan Wazir, said that innocent tribal people are becoming victims of the US drone strikes, and therefore, US drone operations must be halted as soon as possible. Ghalib said that the N-league leadership is not silent over the issue adding that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had raised the issue of US drone strikes in United Nation General Assembly session.
A global movement who campaign to end grave abuses of human rights.Amnesty International, new major report released on 22 October 2013 said,New evidence indicates that the USA has carried out unlawful killings in Pakistan through drone attacks, some of which could even amount to war crimes,
\"Secrecy surrounding the drones program gives the US administration a license to kill beyond the reach of the courts or basic standards of international law. It\'s time for the USA to come clean about the drones program and hold those responsible for these violations to account,\" said Mustafa Qadri, Amnesty International\'s Pakistan Researcher.
I am looking towards the sky and thinking with fear, watching US drones flying continuously, and praying for the vanishing of US drones from this part of the world, Rukhsana Bibi concluded.

TTP ready to talk if govt announce sceasefire: Shahidullah

 http://www.thefrontierpost.com/article/46264/

 07-10-2013

Ihsan Dawar & Farooq Mehsud
PESHAWAR: Spokesman for the banned outfit Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Shahidullah Shahid has once again reiterated that TTP was ready to negotiate with government. However, he added the government should initiate ceasefire as the first step towards peace building.
Talking to The Frontier Post from an undisclosed location the TTP spokesman said after All Party Conference (APC) government didnt contact them. Our aim for dialogue is to bring Shariah Laws in Pakistan. Till date we were trying to achieve this target with force but we have accepted the talks offer with hope to bring Shariah in the country through dialogues with the government, Shahidullah Shahid said.
He said if the government implements Shariah in the country they would not use their weapons against the government however, he reiterated the stance that Taliban would not lay down their arms.
Shahid said the TTP feel that the government was not fully serious in its peace talks offer. We feel the government is not serious in peace building as the statements of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif have contradictions, Shahidullah Shahid. He said the constitution of Pakistan was more secular than Islamic.
Replying to a question he said that Taliban were more organized and strong than ever and they were not scared of any government action against them. Talking about drone attacks he said such attacks only kill innocent peopleAmerica some time kills 16 of a family, some time kills jirga men and even violates our territory without any fear of being opposed.
TTP leader said that it was strange that when the government could hit the drones it was not which shows the involvement of the government in drone attacks, Shahid added.
Taliban is universal movement for the defense of Islam and Muslims. We are not targeting innocent people, Shahid claimed by saying that the Kohati church blasts and other recent terrorists activities were carried out by a third hand which he called was working for Jewish lobby.
He also blamed media for damaging dialogue process as it was criticizing Taliban at a time when there was not even a written agreement between government and TTP.

He categorically stated that the nuclear programme of Pakistan was not their target.

Speaking about the differences in the ranks of Taliban he said Taliban were united under the leadership of Hakimulllah Mehsud and were ready to face any kind of situation.

We are not limited to just Tribal Areas rather we have comrades in all over the country so none should be optimist about finishing the Taliban, Shahid claimed.

While commenting over attack on Malala, Shahid said Malala was not targeted because she was acquiring the education by going to school but because she was defaming Islam which could not be overlooked.

He said stoppage of drone strikes, release of Taliban in Pakistani jails and return of forces from tribal areas were the three main points on which the dialogue process should be based on. These three points would also assume how much the government is serious in holding peace talks with Taliban, Shahidullah Shahid said.

In case of failure of talks, Shahid said, Taliban would fight alongside Hafiz Gul Bahadur against the government.

Afghan Taliban are our Jihadi brothers, in the beginning we were helping them but they are now strong enough and they dont need our help, but they are now supporting us financially, Shahidullah Shahid revealed while adding they also provide safe shelter to Fazlulah in Kunar area of Afghanistan.

Replying to a question about Imran Khan Office offer to Taliban he said Imran was part of the secular system. He also said that Taliban had presence all over the country and do not need any office.

If Imran wants to establish peace, he should come out of the present secular system and then we can give him any kind of favour he wishes the TTP spokesman added.

If Allah gives us success in bringing true Islamic system in the country, we assure uniform status, speedy and cheap justice and a healthy environment to all the countrymen he concluded.

JUI-F rigged elections: Losing candidates write to ECP

JUI-F rigged elections: Losing candidates write to ECP........http://www.thefrontierpost.com/article/12597/

Farooq Mehsud
D.I.Khan: On NA-42-South Waziristan, Mulana Jamal-u-Din of JUI-(F), is declared a winner as per the unofficial result, but all the other candidates are alleging that polling station set up in the Gomal University DI Khan and in some areas of Tank and in the Open area of South Waziristan polling station were intrude and polling stopped indefinitely for hours and the Presiding officers were allowing certain voters carrying JUI-(F) voter slips.
The letter carrying the signatures of Jamat-e-Islami candidate, Dr. Sami Ullah Jan, PML N candidate Dilawar Khan Mehsud,, PTI’s candidate Dost Muhamad Mehsud, independent Candidate Abdu Rahim Burki and Brig® Qayum sher and others with out JUI F , has been sent to the Agency Returning officer of South Waziristan in which allegation of major irregularities, mismanagement and rigging is pointed out and demanded re-election.
Allegation raised in the letter are “ the final voter list that was issued to candidates on the 6th of May were not to be found on the election day when the voters went to cast their votes, but new voter list was given to single political party which took advantage out of this.”
In the letter it is also alleged that certain presiding officers on official duty were changed or relocated in the middle of the day due to unknown reasons that was aimed to pay way for rigging.
And certain female polling agents of different polling stations were not provided with the form 14 ( statement of accounts) in spite of their repeated request and were sent empty handedly which is a blatant violation of all rules of ECP and is considered clear cut cheating and rigging.
In the letter it is added that on the polling day the voting book available with the presiding officers were containing photographs of the voters but if the voter was not from JUI, the officer straight away refused the poor voters (since most of them were illiterates) & advised them that their votes are missing from the list, therefore causing utter confusion amongst the voters & eventually the voters were denied their constitutional right to vote as a citizen of Pakistan.
Due to the Operation Reh-e-Nejat, in 2009, the Mehsud tribes become displaced and settled in the District of Tank and Dera Ismail khan and other cities of the country. In 2008, no election was held on NA-42 South Waziristan, for 2013 election the polling station were set up in DI khan and Tank.

Effects of terrorism on music in Waziristan

http://www.thefrontierpost.com/article/3781/

Effects of terrorism on music in Waziristan

07-04-2013
Farooq Mehsud
Mr. Rehmat, a 50 years old drummer from District Tank KPK, is Saraiki speaker but in spite of the fact that he is non-Pashto speaker, he was a prominent member of music band of the renewed singer of South Waziristan late Kamal Mahsud. In the city of Tank and in Waziristan where from 9/11, music/drum beating is like a camel in a taxi but he was beating his drums very slowly in his home even now I feel fear and terror from his expressions of face due to the prevailing law and order situation in the tribal belt of Pakistan, which affected activities badly, serving a miserable life with meager economic resources and beautiful memories of the past, when he was living a prosperous life among the culture loving people of Waziristan. "I have been beating drums when I was 10 years old and it is not only my profession but with the passage of time it becomes my hobby and I have beaten my drums even in the Presidency in different functions," he said.
His work and profession is not only affected, but almost it has been stopped and finished since 2004, the war on terror was first launched in the region. To quote Mr. Rehmat, "Now I am regretting because this skill gave me nothing I suppose to learn some other skill at least I can run my kitchen".
He was depressed too much, as having no money to visit hospital in case someone is ill in his family, children education suffered due to lack of resources and he is unable to pay their school fee. He remained unfamiliar with any other skills as he spent the whole of his life in the same skill of drum beating which as a profession is almost strictly prohibited in the area and the people cannot arrange programs and ceremonies in the area due to life threats from the miscreants.
Music is an essential part of Pashtun culture. Its presence must be acknowledged in every happy moment either it was a marriage or other events in Hujra. They are the true reflectors and representatives of the sweet feelings and emotions of Pashtun society. But due to terrorism in South Waziristan and in outskirts, 105 music artists are now living from hand to mouth. Mr. Rehmat (Tabla Marr) in a smiling face says that in peaceful days in this region, music played a very important role in bringing happiness. Here common people enjoy it a lot because they want to be a part of happiness and peace.
"Pashtuns are music lovers. In the peaceful days, I observed in my every music program when all the young and old would get together in a spark for their traditional Attan dance", he remembered.
Music and traditional songs are very common in whole of the tribal belt especially in carnivals, local sports events and in traditional cultural programs. But now due to threats from the miscreants, all the talented and famous singers like late Kamal Mahsud, Ayub Khan, Shan Mahsud and Qutab khan left their native land and are living undercover life. They have no area with their profession any more.
Gul Zaman (Drum Beater) 70, says despite my 60 years association with this profession I left it because it has lost its value and now it is not reflecting the true feelings and sentiments of the communities concerned. "Here situation is not favorable and we have no choice other than to leave this profession because when there is no happiness, there is no music we even don't beat our drums as practice or for our own pleasure", he added.
In the conflict zones of Pakistan, the government provides assistance to the musicians but they totally ignored the musicians of Waziristan and Tank districts. That's why the daughter of Rehmatullah (famous Tabla Marr in the area) Zarrina told The Frontier Post that I remember the past days when people would invite us for their every event and our drum was the sign of peace and emotion in Pukhtun culture. But now the situation is different and we are facing problems and difficulties and no one cares about our happiness and emotions. "Last month my father broke his leg and we have no money to take him to the doctor in DI Khan. After three days when the doctor visited Tank district then I took my father to him for bandage of his foot", he said.
Music not only gives happiness but it always helps to provide strength and health to our nerves and brain. The psychiatrist in the D.I. Khan Government Hospital, Muneer Dawar told The Frontier Post that from the last few years, he has noted increase in the cases of physiological disorder from Waziristan and outskirts. It has many reasons but restriction on music is the essential one because they banned a way in which people can express their feelings and emotions. He defended his comments and said, "A person who avoids from listening to music, he has some physiological problem".
If terrorism on the one hand destroyed the folk music and musicians of Waziristan and Tank districts but on the other hand, now some of the young have started to bring peace and produce the new modern music to give a message of peace through their culture in the region. Said Alam Mahsud a young local singer, who took birth in singing field, in terrorism and he uses his music to give hope to his people. Said Alam Mahsud sings songs of peace from the last two years. He told that poetry and music is the only hope for us to give happiness to our people and remind them our peaceful past. No one can destroy our cultural tradition and values till we keep alive our music and poetry. "Terrorism destroys our houses and we are living in camps as IDPs now it's our responsibility to give hope and happiness to our people and we used music as instrument for that which is an essential part of Pukhtun culture".
Said Alam nowadays voluntarily performs in the cultural events in D.I. Khan and in other parts of the country just for to alive their culture and to bring peace through music. South Waziristan's senior retired bureaucrat Dost Muhammad Mehsud said that the government should make a separate special quota and provision in the federal/ provincial budget for the artists, musicians, drum beaters etc hailing from South Waziristan and District Tank and outskirts so that the cultural activities.

Farooq Mehsud
D.I.KHAN: General Election, 2013 will be not free and fair in FATA, therefore, I did not submit my nomination paper from NA-41 South Waziristan PML-Q Central Senior Vice President
Ajmal khan Wazir claimed before media while addressing a press conference here on Sunday.
Wazir, after submitting his Nomination Papers to run for NA-24 Dera Ismail Khan and PK-65 that due to failure of ECP to ensure implementation of the recommendations of the Joint Committee of the 11 Political Parties both leftists and rightists on FATA reforms which was presented on December 27, 2012 to the Election Commission of Pakistan.
Ajmal wazir added that none of the recommendations were practically enforced due to which the election cannot be free and fair in FATA.
He explained that they earlier recommended to the ECP for a crash program to provide Fata people with computerized CNIC and to register them as voters, but the request was turned down as there has been neither crash program nor any registration of votes on their door steps.
He further told that we recommended that ECP should provide opportunity to vote for the IDPs, as many tribesmen and women were living in IDPs camps and with out special arrangements they would not be able to use their right to vote. He said in that case this is a well understood fact that the turn out ration in the polls will be a meager one.
He went on to say after mentioning the recommendations one by one, that none of their recommendations was applied and in that case there was no chance of free and fair polls inside Fata.
"This is the reason that being a tribal of South Waziristan, I have decided to contest for NA-24 and PK-65 of D.I. Khan.
